Lesson 2: Nomenclature of Coordination Compounds
This lesson focuses on the rules for naming coordination compounds according to the IUPAC system. This is a crucial skill for both JEE Main and Advanced.
- Rules for Naming: Students will learn the systematic rules for naming both cationic and anionic complexes. The rules cover the order of naming the ligands and the metal, how to indicate the number of ligands using prefixes, and how to represent the oxidation state of the metal using Roman numerals in parentheses.
- Ligand Names: This includes learning the names of common neutral, anionic, and cationic ligands. For example, is “aqua,” is “ammine,” and is “chloro.”
- Naming the Metal: The name of the metal changes to end with “-ate” if the complex ion is anionic. For example, cobalt becomes “cobaltate,” and iron becomes “ferrate.”
